Definition: “Being a mother is taking the time and energy to take care of another human being with the goal of ensuring that he/she grows up to be capable, caring, and confident.”
For today, feel free to put down the parenting books. Put down any guilt you may carry about not being involved in the PTA; staying too late at the office; not taking your kids to the park that one time when you promised; letting them eat fast food after the soccer practice.
“Being a mother is taking the time and energy to take care of another human being with the goal of ensuring he/she grows up to be capable, caring, and confident.”
The definition is simple but never easy. Motherhood plays out in different ways for different moms in different families and often under very different circumstances.
For today, recognize that if you have a child or many children in your life, you are blessed with the opportunity to LOVE. You are blessed with the connection to these sweet spirits we call children. Whether religious or not, spiritual or not, can you see God in the eyes of your children?
For today, recognize how very lucky you are to be a mother (or a role model to other people’s kids) —to bear such close witness to the sweetness that connects us all. You can see it in your children. What a gift!!
“Being a mother is taking the time and energy to take care of another human being with the goal of ensuring he/she grows up to be capable, caring, and confident.”
If you attach too many requirements to the job description of Mom, you may well attach too many requirements to the job description of “child”. Today, be grateful for breakfast in bed, a handmade card, a flower from the yard, or just seeing those hands holding yours. Your day may be rather uneventful; or it may include a day of pampering; or maybe a trip with other Moms without kids. (If it is the latter, look forward to the opportunity to miss your kids. Missing is connecting; connecting is life).
“Being a mother is taking the time and energy to take care of another human being with the goal of ensuring that he/she grows up to be capable, caring, and confident.”
For today, allow yourself to feel the beauty that is purely and simply your connection as a mother to the spirits that are your children. This is the place from which good and right decisions are made. Imagine: your children are a guidepost living amongst you!
Now read it this way: “Being a mother is the CHANCE to take care of another human being and to help him/her grow up to be capable, caring, and confident.”
If you are grateful for the chance, pay it forward with a hug for your kids. Happy Mother’s Day.
